Suspect in 2015 artist murder case to be tried as an adult

Police in Minnesota have charged a man with the 2015 murder of a popular artist. The defendant was only 14 years of age when he allegedly committed the crime. A Hennepin County judge ruled on Nov. 20 that he will be tried as an adult. Detectives have not been able to identify a motive for the crime, but they have discovered that the man was living next door to the victim when she was killed.

Murder charge for man who told nurse he killed woman

As suspicions swirled around a 34-year-old Minnesota man, he allegedly told a nurse at the Aitkin County Jail that he might have killed a woman. Court filings provided during his appearance in Aitkin County District Court, where he was charged with second-degree murder, stated that authorities had initially arrested him for violating probation while they investigated the disappearance of a 35-year-old woman from Outing. A text message between the missing woman and the man showed that they had been in contact.

Minnesota man sentenced for execution-style killing

A 19-year-old Minnesota man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the execution-style killing of an Iron Range resident in January. The Saint Louis County resident, who originally denied committing the murder, pleaded guilty to a homicide in the first degree charge in September. Prosecutors say the killing took place during an aggravated robbery. He will be eligible for parole in 30 years. The judge also ordered him to pay $6,000 in restitution to the 33-year-old victim's family. He will be given credit for the 10 months he has already spent in custody.

Minnesota man charged with murder and assault

A 22-year-old Minnesota man has been charged with murder in the second degree and assault with a deadly weapon in the second degree in connection with a series of events that left one man dead and another badly injured on the evening of Oct. 9. The man was apprehended at an airport in Connecticut according to media reports. Prosecutors claim that he was attempting to leave the country. The man faces up to 47 years in prison if he is convicted on both counts.

Man says intoxication blocked memory of killing his friend

A statement from the Hennepin County Attorney's Office indicates that a 63-year-old man from Hopkins has entered a guilty plea on charges that he killed his 66-year-old friend in March 2019. When speaking in court, the defendant said that he used a mix of drugs, alcohol and prescription medication the day that his friend died and cannot recall stabbing the man.

Survey finds rapes, sexual assaults increased in 2018

Minnesota readers might be concerned to learn that the number of Americans who say they were victims of rape and sexual assault nearly doubled between 2017 and 2018, according to an annual survey. The study was conducted by the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Minnesota man wanted for murder apprehended in Mexico

A 22-year-old man who was being sought by police in Minnesota in connection with a double homicide was taken into custody in Mexico on Aug. 24. According to media reports, Mexican police apprehended the man in a Cancun hotel room. He is said to have told the Todd County Sheriff's Office that he planned to turn himself in. Mexican authorities say that they plan to hand the man over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for transport back to Minnesota.

Man charged in Minnesota stabbing death

A 23-year-old Minnesota man has been charged with two counts of murder in the second degree in connection with the stabbing death of a 37-year-old woman. Charges of intentional second degree murder and second degree murder while committing second degree assault were filed against the man on Aug. 13. Each of the counts carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison.

Man accused of killing mother and assaulting father

A 42-year-old Minnesota has been charged with murder in the second degree and attempted murder in the second degree for allegedly killing his 68-year-old mother and attempting to kill his 71-year-old father. Prosecutors do not believe that the crimes were premeditated. The man faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted and his bail has been set at $1 million.
