Minnesota man charged with murder and assault

A 22-year-old Minnesota man has been charged with murder in the second degree and assault with a deadly weapon in the second degree in connection with a series of events that left one man dead and another badly injured on the evening of Oct. 9. The man was apprehended at an airport in Connecticut according to media reports. Prosecutors claim that he was attempting to leave the country. The man faces up to 47 years in prison if he is convicted on both counts.

The events began at about 6:30 p.m. when the Minneapolis Police Department received several reports of gunfire outside an apartment complex on East Franklin Avenue. Officers arriving at the scene say they discovered a man who appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital by paramedics. Police subsequently interviewed a man who had been shot in the leg on Riverside Boulevard. Officers say he was able to identify his assailant. His injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

Video surveillance footage is said to show the man talking to the two victims and an unidentified woman shortly before the shooting started. Police believe the man who was killed had been trying to calm the situation. The man allegedly shot his victims with a handgun that he retrieved from a parked vehicle that he later used to flee the scene.

Individuals accused of committing serious crimes like murder may feel the urge to flee when the evidence against them seems strong. Experienced criminal defense attorneys could encourage them to resist this urge as attempts to elude law enforcement are rarely successful and usually lead to additional charges and more severe penalties. Attempts to flee may also make negotiating a favorable plea agreement more difficult.
