Man taken into custody on assault charge

At 2:02 a.m. on April 6, police responded to a call about a possible domestic assault in Brainerd, Minnesota. When police got to the scene of the incident, they said a man inside of the residence turned the lights off and retreated to a back room. Authorities forced their way in to the residence, and the man reportedly complied with police orders.

The 41-year-old was found with both fresh and dried blood on his body, and officers also noticed blood smeared on the walls. A woman was found in the residence who was also covered in blood. Authorities say that she had signs of a concussion and was unable to give a complete account of what happened. However, she did say that that the man choked her and threw her into a cabinet. Guns and ammunition were found in the residence, and the man allegedly had a knife on his person when police searched him.

Police say that the accused told authorities he fell down and denied assaulting or harming the woman. The man was charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, third-degree assault and domestic assault. His bail was set at either $50,000 or $100,000 without conditions. He was in Crow Wing County Jail as of April 11.

Those who are charged with attempted homicide or any other violent crime could face many years in jail or other significant penalties. An attorney may be able to create a defense to the charge such as contending that the defendant acted in self-defense. An attorney might also argue that a person's injuries occurred prior to any incident that resulted in a defendant being charged. If successful, this might result in a person obtaining a plea deal or another favorable outcome in their criminal case.
