Man faces murder charges in death of mother

A 34-year-old Minnesota man has been charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his mother. On Feb. 22 around 7:30 p.m., the man's mother called police to the home they shared. She said he was demanding his medication despite having already taken it and that she was worried because he sometimes became violent. However, police reported that the man did not seem upset.

The woman declined police arrangements for her to stay somewhere else that night. Law enforcement was called to the home a second time just after 8 p.m., this time by the son claiming his mother had stabbed herself. He told police the knife was in the mailbox and that he did not know why she had stabbed herself.

Police found three knives in the mailbox and the man's mother in her bed. She had been stabbed in her back and on her left and right side. The woman died later at the Mayo Clinic in Austin. The following day, the man said he had grabbed the knives after his mother would not let him into her room to get his pills and that she tried to call the police. The man said he knew he was killing her as he stabbed her.

A person who is facing serious charges such as murder or another form of homicide may want to discuss defense strategies with an attorney. Depending on the specifics of the case, there may be a number of options available. For example, eyewitness accounts may be faulty. Forensic evidence could be mishandled and contaminated, or if a person's rights were violated at some point, associated evidence could be dismissed. Another option might be to claim self-defense.
